Moving interstate checklist: what changes when you cross a border

LAST REVIEWED 23 SEP 202612 MIN READWRITTEN FOR AUSTRALIA

Every state and territory runs its own licence, registration and tenancy system, and their deadlines are separate from each other. The list below covers all eight, with a link to the authority that sets each rule.

Before you go

1
If you rent, give written notice. The minimum period depends on your jurisdiction, your agreement and your reason for leaving — check it with your state tenancy authority.
2
Consider booking an interstate removalist six to eight weeks out. That is a planning suggestion, not a rule: capacity is usually the constraint, especially around month-end.
3
Photograph every room before the furniture goes, alongside your entry condition report.
4
Check your current licence and registration expiry dates, so nothing lapses in transit.
5
Arrange internet at the new address early — see the moving house checklist for timing.

Licence and registration are two separate deadlines

Do not assume one order. Licence transfer and vehicle registration have their own time limits, and in some states the registration deadline is the shorter one. In Queensland, for example, a vehicle garaged in the state generally needs Queensland registration within 14 days, while the licence transfer is required within three months. Check both dates for your destination, and put the earlier one in your plan first.

DEADLINES ARE SET BY THE DESTINATION
The time limits are set by the state or territory you are moving to, and they change. Confirm both the licence and the registration period at the link above before you rely on it.

If you rent: bond and condition report

This section applies to renters only. In most jurisdictions your new bond is lodged with a government authority; in the Northern Territory the landlord or agent holds it in trust. Who lodges it and how is set by the destination’s tenancy law, so check the authority for your new state rather than assuming it works like the one you left.

Complete the entry condition report within your new jurisdiction’s deadline. Our bond guide covers what to record and where to dispute a claim.

After you arrive

1
Register your vehicle and transfer your licence, each by its own deadline.
2
Update Medicare and myGov with your new address (Services Australia).
3
Update your electoral enrolment once you have lived at the new address for at least one month — the AEC’s eligibility rule, so this is not a first-week task (AEC).
4
Work through the change of address checklist, including toll accounts and pet registration in the new state.
5
If you rent, return the condition report within the deadline and keep your bond receipt.
